Google doubles down on AI for search
Google is ramping up its AI efforts in Search with a wave of new features unveiled at I/O 2025, led by AI Mode—a fully reimagined search experience powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5. It breaks down complex questions into subtopics, runs multiple searches in parallel, and returns more relevant, detailed results, complete with sources and real-time updates. Liz Reid, Google’s Head of Search, calls it a move "from information to intelligence," and early adoption supports the claim, with AI Overviews driving a 10% uptick in usage across core markets like the U.S. and India.
Search is starting to look more like an AI agent. Deep Search can now compile expert-level research across hundreds of sources in minutes. Live tools built on Project Astra let users point their phone’s camera and talk to Search, turning Google into a live tutor, coach, or explainer. Agent-like features go further: AI can fill out forms, book tickets, make reservations, and shop online using basic user guidance, all while integrating with services like Google Pay and Ticketmaster.
Search is also becoming more personalized. Opt-in features use Gmail and past searches to tailor results. For visual learners, AI Mode can now build custom graphs and charts for data-heavy queries, starting with finance and sports. As the internet grows more complex, these tools don’t just help people search—they help them think more clearly, act more quickly, and stay in control.
Takeaways at a glance
AI Mode: New tab in Search, powered by Gemini 2.5, breaking down complex queries into subqueries.
Deep Search: Runs hundreds of searches, builds expert-level, fully-cited reports.
Live Capabilities: Multimodal camera + voice search, turning Search into a real-time assistant.
Agentic Actions: Book tickets, reserve restaurants, make purchases.
Personal Context: Pulls in Gmail, search history for better recommendations.
Data Visuals: Builds custom charts and graphs for sports and finance.
What We Think About It:
This is a strong signal that Google’s strategy is pivoting from keyword search to intelligent agents. The integration of personal context and agentic functions blurs the line between search engine and digital assistant. If the execution matches the promise, this could upend how users discover, decide, and act online.
What You Can Do Right Now:
Try turning on AI Mode in Google Search (no sign-up needed) and experiment with asking more complex or personal questions. Think: “Find fun outdoor restaurants near me this weekend” or “Help me choose a gift for a 10-year-old who loves science.” If you’re often overwhelmed by too many links, let the AI do the sorting and summarizing. It’s built to save you time and effort, not just answer questions.
