TECH
ByteDance would rather shut down TikTok than sell the company. The US only provides a quarter of TikTok's global revenue and only represents 5% of ByteDance's daily active users across all of its media platforms. The short deadline to sell would likely put downward pressure on any potential sale price, making the option even less appealing. Selling the company would mean divesting the algorithms that power TikTok and its video recommendations, which raises more complications.

OpenAI’s video generation tool Sora took the AI community by surprise in February with fluid, realistic video that seems miles ahead of competitors. But the carefully stage-managed debut left out a lot of details — details that have been filled in by a filmmaker given early access to create a short using Sora.

Meta has flooded its social media platforms with artificial intelligence. Soon enough, Meta AI will be everywhere: In your Facebook news feed, Instagram search bar, and even your conversations with friends on Messenger. The company’s Llama 3 large language model is also perhaps the most powerful open-source model on the market (though its openness is an ongoing debate). Meta is flexing its muscle and betting that AI ubiquity will actually improve user experience.
PROGRAMMING AND DESIGN
The llamafile project has become one of Mozilla's top three most-favorited repositories on GitHub. llamafile is an easy and fast way to run a wide range of open large language models on consumer hardware. This article covers the project's development, explaining the changes that have been implemented since v0.1. The latest release includes support for the very latest open models and a number of big performance improvements for CPU inference.

This famous quote from, Leslie Lamport, an A.M. Turing Award Laureate, summarizes the challenges in building and maintaining a distributed system. But why is there a need for such complicated systems? With the advent of the internet and smarter devices, the amount of data that needs to be processed has exploded. Simple day-to-day activities like ordering an Uber, watching a show on Netflix, a simple Google search, online shopping, or interacting with social media, all trivial actions that we take for granted are powered by hundreds of distribution services. All these services are built on the backbone of some foundational papers in distributed systems.
