GPT-5 Is Coming: What to expect from OpenAI’s next leap

OpenAI’s GPT-5 is nearly here, and early testers say it’s excellent at coding, math, and science but maybe not the same seismic shift we saw from GPT-3 to GPT-4. Two anonymous users told Reuters that GPT-5 is impressive, but its step up feels more like refinement than revolution.

OpenAI hasn’t commented publicly, but Head of Applied Research Boris Power posted, “Excited to see how the public receives GPT-5,” hinting that launch is imminent. Sam Altman has also suggested that GPT-5 combines large model capabilities with “test-time compute,” a new approach where the AI pulls in more processing power dynamically for harder tasks.

While GPT-4 became famous for its dramatic leap in reasoning and its ability to pass the bar exam in the top 10%—a major milestone in generative AI—OpenAI has hit real limits this time. More compute power is available, but high-quality internet-scale data isn’t growing. As former Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever put it, “the amount of data was not,” highlighting a major bottleneck for scaling. There’s also the risk of hardware failures during training that can ruin months of effort.

With fierce competition from Google, Anthropic, Meta, and open-source models like LLaMA 3, GPT-5 enters a dense field. But there’s still hope it will go beyond chat and into autonomous task execution. As Navin Chaddha of Mayfield noted, “The hope is that GPT-5 will unlock AI applications that move beyond chat.” Whether this update transforms how we work or simply polishes what’s already powerful, the focus is shifting from hype to utility—where AI stops being magic and starts being infrastructure.
