Big Takeaway: OpenAI published a response to the NYT lawsuit claiming training AI on web data like articles is fair use. (Find it here)
It would be impossible to create AI tools like ChatGPT without copyrighted material, OpenAI says.
They also claim The New York Times' falls short of telling the full story and that regurgitation (repeating content) is an uncommon defect that they are actively striving to fix.
The New York Times and OpenAI were in talks for a partnership before the lawsuit, and now that idea is up in smoke.

Language learning app Duolingo has cut some contractors while increasing its use of AI to generate content. About 10% of contractors were laid off as the company needs fewer people for tasks now handled by its generative AI.(View the termination email here)
📲 Microsoft Copilot falling behind ChatGPT
Despite offering GPT-4 for free, Microsoft's new Copilot app does not appear to be drawing users away from OpenAI's ChatGPT so far based on install data. Copilot has seen only 2.1 million downloads since its quiet launch in late December, versus 4.2 million for ChatGPT in the same period. (Full article here)
