Big Takeaway: A study by the University of Cambridge revealed that the clinical knowledge and reasoning skills of GPT-4 are nearing the level of specialist eye doctors.
In the study, GPT-4 was tested against eye doctors at various career stages, including unspecialized junior doctors, and trainee and expert eye doctors, using 87 patient scenarios to assess diagnosis and treatment advice skills.
GPT-4 performed significantly better than unspecialized junior doctors and comparable to trainee and expert eye doctors, although the highest-performing doctors still outscored GPT-4.
The study suggests that while large language models like GPT-4 will not replace healthcare professionals, they have the potential to enhance healthcare by integrating into clinical workflows.
