Big Takeaway: Google has launched a new family of lightweight open-weight models named Gemma, starting with Gemma 2B and Gemma 7B, inspired by its Gemini models.
Unlike traditional open-source models, Gemma models are described as "open models," indicating developers can use them for inferencing and fine-tuning.
Google claims that Gemma models significantly outperform larger models on key benchmarks. (See above picture) Both the Gemma and Gemini models can be run locally on computers.
Google is offering $300 in free credits for first-time Google Cloud customers to use Gemma and up to $500,000 for researchers to advance their projects.

Big Takeaway: Hundreds in the AI community have signed an open letter urging strict regulation of AI-generated deepfakes. (You can add your signature here)
The letter calls for the full criminalization of deepfake child sexual abuse materials (CSAM), demanding criminal penalties for creating or spreading harmful deepfakes.
Notable signatories include Andrew Yang and Yoshua Bengio, among hundreds of global academics and professionals from various disciplines.
So far there have been a few signatories from OpenAI and Google but none from Anthropic, Amazon, Apple, or Microsoft.

Samsung announced it is bringing its Galaxy AI features like Live Translate, Chat Assist, and Note Assist to more devices beyond the S24 series through a One UL 6.1 update in late March.
