Big Takeaway: A Chinese national and former Google employee, Linwei Ding, is charged with stealing over 500 files containing confidential AI technology information from Google.
Ding, 38, was arrested in Newark, California, and faces four counts of theft of trade secrets, punishable by up to 10 years in prison each.
Ding is accused of uploading over 500 confidential files, simultaneously starting work with two China-based AI tech startups, one of which he founded.
Ding allegedly used a method to avoid detection by Google, involving the Apple Notes application and converting files to PDFs before uploading them to his Google Cloud.

Big Takeaway: Shane Jones, a Microsoft engineer, has raised safety concerns about Microsoft's AI image generator, Copilot Designer, with the Federal Trade Commission.
Jones reported that Copilot Designer generated harmful images, including content related to abortion rights, teenagers with assault rifles, sexualized images of women in violent scenarios, underage drinking, and drug use.
The AI tool also produced politically sensitive images, such as Disney characters depicted in conflict zones like the Gaza Strip and wearing military uniforms.
Following the generation of explicit images of Taylor Swift by Copilot Designer, Jones also wrote to US senators, leading to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella labeling the incident "alarming and terrible" and pledging to enhance safety guardrails. Spoiler, the guardrails aren’t working.
