Elon Musk wants to “understand the universe,” so he created a new firm to try and do just that.
The company is named “xAI” and it consists of the Avengers of the machine learning and artificial intelligence sectors. The team is made up of 12 renowned researchers from top AI powerhouses, including DeepMind, OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

For the past three months, Writers Guild of America (WGA) members have been striking outside Hollywood studios. The AI advancements over the course of 2023 have hit their industry hard.
The use of AI in deepfakes and AI generated content has writers worried about their future in the entertainment industry.
Negotiations between the WGA and the producers fell through in May, which led to writers going on strike right outside of the production studios. Writers across the world are feeling the impact of AI generated writing. I’m curious.

Epoch
An 'Epoch' in the context of machine learning and AI, refers to one complete pass through the entire training dataset while training a machine learning model. In other words, each epoch is when the entire dataset is processed by the machine learning algorithm once.
Why is this important? When models are trained the data isn’t run through the algorithm once. It’s run multiple times. Each run-through helps the model learn a little bit more about our data, refining its predictions or classifications. Each of these run-throughs is an epoch.
Imagine you're studying for a test. Each time you read the entire set of your notes, you understand the material a little better. Similarly, each epoch helps the model understand the data better. However, more epochs aren't always better! Too many epochs can lead the model to start 'overfitting' - this is when it becomes so familiar with the training data that it performs poorly on unseen, new data.
