OpenAI Pulls Its Models Out of Cursor

SpaceX closed its $60 billion purchase of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor, on August 14. Fourteen days later OpenAI said it wants out. Last Friday it announced that it will stop serving its models inside Cursor on November 12, the latest date its contract allows, and that no future model goes there in the meantime. The reason given was not price or capacity. OpenAI said it cannot be confident SpaceX will use the technology within its terms of service, and pointed at Musk's companies breaking contracts before, starting with Twitter cutting off OpenAI's data access in December 2022. Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Codex at OpenAI, put it in five words. "It boils down to trust."

OpenAI models account for about 5% of Cursor's traffic, a number Michael Truell, Cursor's co-founder and chief executive, pointed out himself. Losing them is a rounding error for a product that mostly runs Claude. The exclusion is what stings. Astra, OpenAI's next model, will never ship inside Cursor, and Truell said his team had trusted OpenAI to stay neutral about who its customers answer to. Anthropic moved the opposite way the same week. Tom Brown said it will keep adding compute so Claude runs better in Cursor, which is a turn for the lab that cut off Windsurf and revoked OpenAI's own API access last year. Musk answered the way Musk answers. "I couldn't care less."

Access used to be a commercial question with a price attached. Now it depends on who owns your company, and it can change after a deal you never signed. Cursor did nothing wrong here. It got bought, and a supplier walked out on the new owner. If your product runs on one model provider, you are one acquisition or one feud away from a migration nobody planned. Cursor survives this because it already routes across several models and Claude was doing most of the work anyway. Redundancy looked like overhead right up until the week it became the reason November 12 is an inconvenience instead of an outage.

Takeaways at a Glance:

  • SpaceX closed its $60 billion purchase of Cursor's parent company, Anysphere, on August 14.

  • OpenAI models stop working inside Cursor on November 12, the longest notice its contract allows.

  • OpenAI cited trust, pointing to Twitter cutting its data access in 2022 and to Musk's companies breaking contracts.

  • Astra, OpenAI's next model, is excluded outright.

  • OpenAI is about 5% of Cursor's traffic. Anthropic is adding compute for Claude there instead.

What We Think About It:

  • This is not a revenue decision. OpenAI is paying a small price to keep its next model away from Musk.

  • Anthropic just became Cursor's default supplier. Being the vendor who stays is worth more than any benchmark.

  • Model access is now a term of your next acquisition. Buyers will start asking who supplies you.

What You Can Do Right Now:

  • Name the one vendor whose exit would break your product. If you can't, that's the finding.

  • Ask your team how long a switch to a second model would actually take. Get a number, not a shrug.

  • Raising or selling? Expect a buyer to ask who your model provider is, and who owns them
