Anthropic's answer to AI anxiety

Anthropic has launched a new initiative to track the economic ripple effects of AI, particularly its impact on jobs and wages. The program, called the AI & Labor Observatory, is being developed in collaboration with academics from institutions like the University of Chicago and MIT. It will use real-time labor market data to measure how AI tools influence employment patterns across industries, with the aim of informing future policy. According to Daniela Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic, this is a proactive effort to “shape the future of work, rather than just respond to it.”

The announcement comes amid growing unease over automation's role in displacing white-collar jobs. Recent analysis from Goldman Sachs estimated that AI could affect 300 million full-time jobs globally. Anthropic’s observatory will monitor changes in wage levels, demand for specific skills, and regional disparities as AI adoption spreads. The data won’t just be internal—Anthropic plans to publish it regularly so that researchers, policymakers, and even other tech firms can use it. “The transparency is the point,” says economist Erik Brynjolfsson, who is advising the project.

This move hints at a deeper shift in how AI labs see their responsibility in shaping economic systems, not just advancing tech. As companies race to build more powerful models, the long-term value may come not from speed, but from trust and adaptation. If AI is to redefine productivity, then the real challenge is making sure it doesn't discard people in the process.

Takeaways at a Glance:

  • Anthropic's initiative will track AI’s economic impact, especially on jobs and wages

  • Collaborating with University of Chicago, MIT, and Stanford economists

  • Aims to guide policymakers and developers with transparent, real-time data

  • Responds to growing concern about AI-driven job displacement

  • Data will be made public and updated regularly

What We Think About It:

  • This is a smart preemptive move by Anthropic to get ahead of the public backlash against AI-induced automation. It acknowledges that the tech isn’t neutral—economic fallout needs just as much engineering as the models themselves. It may also give the company a long-term strategic edge in the trust economy.

What You Can Do Right Now:

  • Pay attention to how AI is showing up at work. Is it speeding up your tasks, changing your role, or replacing things you used to do? Start noting those patterns.

  • Consider learning new skills tied to AI tools—not just prompt engineering, but how your field is shifting. Websites like Coursera, Khan Academy, or even YouTube are great places to start.

  • Talk about it. If you're seeing change, your coworkers probably are too. Make it a topic of discussion, not something we quietly absorb until it’s too late.

  • Follow projects like Anthropic’s labor tracker. These are going to be early warning systems for where society is headed. The data is public, and it’s meant for all of us.

  • Don’t panic, plan. If you feel uneasy about job security, this kind of data can help you make career decisions based on where AI is helping vs. replacing people.
