AI is changing jobs, here’s how
A new study from Stanford economists offers some of the first hard data showing how AI is shifting the job market—and it's hitting young workers the hardest. Since 2022, entry-level employment in AI-exposed roles like customer service and software engineering has dropped 13%, while older workers in the same fields have seen employment growth. Researchers found that younger employees, ages 22 to 25, are especially vulnerable in areas like programming, accounting, and sales—jobs where generative AI tools like ChatGPT can perform many core tasks.
Economist Erik Brynjolfsson points out that AI models are trained on the same kind of knowledge early-career workers typically bring to the table—book-based, structured, and digitized. “There's a lot of overlap between LLMs and the knowledge young people have,” he says. In contrast, older employees often bring tacit, unwritten know-how and communication skills that AI hasn't yet replicated. That soft-skill edge seems to be insulating them from displacement.
The findings come from a deep dive into ADP payroll data covering 25 million U.S. workers. It paints a nuanced picture of AI’s impact: in some industries, AI is augmenting jobs—like nursing—while in others, it’s automating them outright. Brynjolfsson notes that this is a familiar cycle: tech destroys some jobs and creates new ones. The key is adaptation. For young professionals entering the workforce, the differentiator may be less about what they know, and more about how well they can work with the tools doing the knowing.
Takeaways at a Glance:
13% drop in entry-level jobs in AI-exposed fields since 2022
Customer service and software engineering saw ~20% entry-level employment decline
Older workers in same roles gained employment (up to 9%)
Skills learned at universities increasingly overlap with AI capabilities
ADP payroll data from 25M+ workers used for the study
Augmentation (like in nursing) vs. automation (like in customer service) is a key distinction
Early-career professionals most at risk if not adapting to AI tooling
Entry-level AI salaries rose 12% YOY, signaling demand for AI-savvy talent
What We Think About It:
This reinforces the growing pressure on early-career hires to integrate AI skills immediately. Soft skills and real-world pattern recognition are still a moat, but not forever. Organizations need to rethink how they onboard and train junior hires in an AI-first landscape.
What You Can Do Right Now:
Look at the tasks you do every day. Which ones are repetitive and easy for AI to take on? Reframe them into AI-augmented workflows, so you can spend more time on judgment, creativity, and decision-making.
