The Edge: Large language models like ChatGPT frequently make up facts, known as hallucination, due to how they are statistically trained on patterns.
Hallucinations can range from harmless to dangerous, like giving bad medical advice or distributing malicious code.
Models don't have true intelligence - they simply learn to associate words and concepts based on data patterns.
This probability-based approach works well overall but can't guarantee factual accuracy.

Hallucination
Hallucination refers to instances when the model generates or outputs information that wasn't present or suggested in the input data. Imagine a neural network trained to caption images: if it labels a dog in a picture that clearly doesn't contain a dog, it's "hallucinating" that detail. Such behaviors often arise from biases in the training data or from overfitting, where the model is too tightly tailored to its training examples and fails to generalize well to new data.
