AI Gets a Brokerage Account

Robinhood has announced the launch of agentic trading, letting third-party AI platforms connect to a dedicated brokerage account and execute real stock trades on your behalf. The plumbing is MCP, the Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets agents act on external services and not just query them. You fund a separate agentic account, configure what the agent is allowed to do, and connect it to whatever AI platform you prefer. Options, crypto, and futures are coming. Stocks are live in beta now.

Alongside it: an agentic credit card for existing Gold Card holders. Agents get virtual cards that earn 3% cash back, can be capped by monthly spending amount, and deleted at any time. Safety controls include trade previews, fraud detection, and an instant kill switch. Robinhood built on MCP, an open protocol, which means any compatible AI platform can plug in and route through it. The financial layer is now callable from outside the app.

Robo-advisors automated rule-following. Agentic systems automate judgment. Those are different things. The early version here is deliberately constrained: isolated accounts, limited capital, stocks only in beta. The version that matters is what gets built when this scales, when millions of agents are acting on market conditions through open protocols simultaneously. Robinhood has the brand and user base to push that question into every other broker's product roadmap.

Takeaways at a Glance:

  • Robinhood launched agentic trading in beta, currently supporting stock trades only.

  • Agents connect via MCP, compatible with Claude, ChatGPT, and other platforms.

  • Users fund a separate, isolated agentic account and set permissions for what the agent can execute.

  • An agentic credit card also launched for existing Gold Card holders, giving agents virtual cards with 3% cash back.

  • Safety controls include spending caps, trade previews, fraud detection, and an instant kill switch.

  • Options, crypto, futures, event contracts, and prediction markets are on the roadmap.

  • The protocol is open. Any MCP-compatible platform can connect.

What We Think About It:

  • Robinhood is the first major consumer finance platform to put real execution capability in agents' hands through an open protocol. The platform architecture matters more than the product announcement. If MCP becomes required routing for financial platforms the way ACH became required for payments, whoever builds the best agent-native brokerage wins. Robinhood has the distribution to make a serious run at that position. But obviously it remains to be seen as to how much people trust AI to handle their money.

What You Can Do Right Now:

  • If you're already using Claude or ChatGPT, the agentic trading beta is worth signing up for. Start with a small, isolated allocation and watch what the agent actually does before giving it more runway. If you're building in fintech, the MCP documentation Robinhood published is worth reading closely. The first products that make agentic finance feel natural for everyday people will move fast.

  • Reflect on your own trust in AI. Are you willing to allow AI to use your hard earned money? Many are excited. Many are not.
