Big Takeaway: The Vesuvius Challenge, launched 10 months ago to solve reading ancient scrolls from Herculaneum that were burned in the 79 AD eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
The $700,000 grand prize winners used AI and computer vision to successfully read the scrolls, unveiling 15 new columns of 2000-year-old text. Revealing new ancient texts on music, food, and pleasure by the Epicurean philosopher Philodemus.
The text unveiled represents only 5% of one scroll, with ongoing efforts in 2024 including a new $100,000 grand prize for reading at least 90% of all four scanned scrolls.
The grand prize winners used three different model architectures and various validation methods to create readable submissions, making the code publicly available as open source.

By analyzing audio data and video of behaviors like blinks and facial temperatures, algorithms can interpret chicken communications and emotions, hopefully leading to “understanding chicken.” What a world we live in.
