Daily Definition

Cognitive Computing

‘Cognitive computing’ refers to technologies that are designed to mimic human intelligence and behavior. These systems aim to simulate human thought processes in a computerized model, allowing machines to interpret data from various sources, learn from it, and make decisions based on that learning—just as a human would.

Think of cognitive computing as a system's ability to provide human-like cognition. It uses techniques from artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, natural language processing, and data analytics to solve complex problems and deliver insights that humans might not be capable of on their own.

Let's consider IBM's Watson as an example. Watson is a cognitive computing system that can understand natural language, generate hypotheses based on evidence, and learn as it goes. It can sift through vast amounts of data—including unstructured data like news articles, research reports, and social media posts—to answer questions and provide insights.
