Narrow AI
'Narrow AI', also known as 'Weak AI,' refers to artificial intelligence systems designed to perform a specific task. These AI systems are called 'narrow' because they are limited in their capabilities and cannot perform tasks beyond what they are programmed for. They lack the ability to understand, apply knowledge, or think abstractly beyond their specific, predefined area.
An easy-to-grasp example is a recommendation system used by online retailers or streaming platforms, like Amazon or Netflix. Such a system is a form of Narrow AI. It uses your browsing or purchasing history to suggest products or movies you might like. It's highly efficient at this specific task, but you can't expect it to understand a conversation or drive a car, for example. It operates within its narrow, predefined domain.
Similarly, AI assistants like Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant are examples of Narrow AI. They can answer your questions, play music, or set reminders, but their abilities are confined to tasks they've been programmed to do.
